I've been torn in this question. Why stay with svn? Wy move to git?
There is only a huge a gray area here. Svn will continue to be a
working and good solution for years to come. Git doesn't really enable
that much magic in this particular use case (doing translations).

This position holds for Jessie IMHO but by then it's probably time to
take care of it for the reason Helge stated, offline work.

I have no problem to work with git, svn, mercurial or whatever.
Aligning stuff is just a matter of the backend people, the translation
teams ("team" in some/my case) will mostly adopt. And given a timely
manner good tutorials can be brought to attention to the translators
(yes, I'll help with that give a reasonable time frame).
