Yes, we (the German translation team) know this issue and have had
heated discussions in the past (and probably will so in the future).
The solution we "found" was to establish a list of translations (held
on a wiki page) we agreed upon. With "agreement" we mean that a
translator should take this as strong suggestion (because the
discussion was hopefully throughly) but of course he/she can deviate.
So these translations are not "at will" and "random".

We sometimes do this as well.
But I strongly suggest to move this discussion to where it belongs -
debian-l10n-german pointing at the precise term and explaining the
exact reasons for other (optional) translations.
