Menu entries are very static so I do not think it is worth the trouble to add translation inside the menu files. It seems much easier to ship translations in the menu package instead. My current plan/position on menu translations: 1) I provide a large POT file with all the menu entries (minus the sections). 2) Someone (not me!) review it and send improvement and bugs in the English menu to the BTS, send comment on the POT file generation process to me. 3) Someone (I am OK to do it) NMU the packages to get the English menus fixed. 4) I publish a fixed POT file and ask for translation. 5) I ship the translation .mo file either in menu or in menu-l10n-*. 6) When we are close to the release we ask for a "menu entries freeze" and do a final update of the menu. Step 1 is essentially completed, see <http://people.debian.org/~ballombe/menu/menu-messages.pot> for the current POT file. So is someone willing to take on Stage 2 ?
