Requirements for a system with translated package descriptions...

Hello all

I speak with doodgie (Adam Heath) in a irc chat and he say this:
<hartmans> grisu: I think your case would be better served by writing up clear requirements (and +no, use gettext is not a valid requiremen t, at least not with the justification given so far) rather +than discussing design or implementation. Pretend you are the customer and the dpk g-team are a bunch +of consultants and try to write up the same requirements spec you would give those consultants.
<doogie_> tell us what you want. not what you want done.

No I write some requirements in the attachement. Maybe you have time
and send some comments or add some new points.

After this discussion I will send this to dpkg@lists.d.o. Maybe they
find a technical solution for ours requirements...

Thanks.

Gruss

                                            (aus einer Programmfehlermeldung)
 some mandatory points:
  - The system must show the translated description on command outputs
    and on the display
  - The system must use the normal environment system from gettext to
choose the displayed translation. ('LANG', 'LANGUAGE', 'LC_ALL'
'LC_MESSAGES' and see the gettext source code) (Also the fallback
    languages)
  - The system must not depend on the package maintainer. some
    solutions:
     - dinstall changes the deb files with an override file
     - the system uses other local override files on the system
  - The system can search in the description of not (yet) installed
    packages descriptions.
  - the system never shows an outdated translation (if someone
changes the orignal description and the
    translation hasn't been modified yet)

 some desirable points:
  - If the user searches in the descriptions (like apt-cache search) the
system should optionally search in the orignal and/or other
    languages also.
  - The translations should also (optional) be included in the deb file
  - A change of a translation doesn't require a new build of the package on
    the build machines

 some needed points:
  - The system uses an optinal override methode (like /etc/menus/ in the
    menu system)
