No, that warning happens on correct images. It just means that qemu does
not dare touching the beginning of an image which was not asserted to be
a raw image.

I believe the fix is to add "format=raw" to the end of the line, like so:

$ kvm -m 1G -drive file=$(echo debian-hurd*.img),cache=writeback,format=raw 

At least, this seemed to work for me.
