I had success using the installer ISO on QEMU/KVM a while back, although that was back when the GRUB installer was broken so I had to boot using a rescue GRUB image and repair the bootloader manually. I hear this has been fixed now, so I definitely recommend the latest ISO. And yes, I noticed significant performance improvement with KVM as opposed to plain QEMU, so I'd say hardware virtualisation does help.
