you can have a look at the build logs by checking[1,2] (warning, the
source package is `git-core'), and it seems that the testsuite is run:
| /usr/bin/make -C t/ all
| make[2]: Entering directory `/build/buildd/git-core-'
| *** t0000-basic.sh ***

In debian/rules:
|         DESTDIR='$(GIT)'-core $(MAKE) all test \
| 		          CC='$(CC)' CFLAGS='$(CFLAGS)' $(OPTS)

I guess it should be trivial to make test only conditionally, using
$(TEST), which is `test' for everything that is not `hurd(-i386)'.
