Did you have a look at /var/log/XFree.0.log (or whatever it is called).
Perhaps there is some clue there. In general, you need to setup your
mouse device/translator first and modify XF86Config-4 for this setup.

Could you tell us the exact versions of the gnumach, hurd and
xserver-xfree86 packages installed on your box? Or did you compile stuff
by hand?
