That's caused by start-stop-daemon, just wait until dpkg 1.10.22 is
built for hurd-i386.

So it's a dpkg problem? As the risk of asking a stupid question, why then does everything else configure properly? I don't mean to be difficult; I just want to understand how everything works and fits together.
