"We" are not being able to do anything, the ball is with the dpkg
maintainers. See http://bugs.debian.org/103024 (reported one year and 82
days ago) and http://bugs.debian.org/145714 (reported 141 days ago).
At some time Adam Heath pointed out a more generic solution to this which he
wanted to implement for some future version (that might have been 1.10 at
that time, I don't remember). I don't know what became of that.
