Dave Kimmel <criscokid@v-wave.com> writes: [that the cross-install method does not work on potato system] well, is installing woody packages with a potato dpkg supported under Debian GNU/Linux? I mean, it usually works, but sometimes it can output warnings, or maybe even break completely... That's why (IIRC) stuff like "apt-get dist-upgrade" always tries to upgrade dpkg first. Since dpkg-hurd is just a sh-script wrapper around dpkg, the same applies to the cross-installation. This needs to be documented in the various install guides! Anyway, two things could be done to ease the life of potato users: * Ignore the warnings about unknown "Origin" and "Bugs" fields. These can be ignored without loss, and if these are the only problems, installation should not abort. * Offer 1.8.x binaries of dpkg and dpkg-deb alongside dpkg-hurd, and modify dpkg-hurd so it can optionally use these instead of the system-wide dpkg programs. -- Robbe
