IIRC, that's supposed to be possible somehow with autoconf.  I know that 
if "configure" scripts are chained together, they will share 
information.  If there's no reply here in a while, I'll ask elsewhere.  
(Thomas and Roland have certainly been around long enough to know if such 
an idea ever became real)
