Re: Login shell (was: Small Bug)

Sorry if it sounded like I wanted to speak against the hurd! That was not at
all my intention. I haven't had much time to use the hurd myself, yet, but
I've been following this list for several months now, and I think I have at
least a bit an idea about the concepts behind it. There is a long list of
really great, revolutionary ideas incorporated in that project.

Now what I did not like about the anonymous-user idea is, that it can't
compare with all those other ideas in the hurd at all. Translators, p.e. are
a extremely powerful means, so that all the effort and incompatibilities are
fully justified. The forth permission set, on the other hand are very
specific solution for a specific problem. Instead of generalizing the
concept of users and permissions in any way, this solution looks more like a
quick hack at a point where the developers did not have a revolutionary
idea.

Of course, that point will not be changed just because of this small
discussion, but perhaps we might begin to view the "superiority" of the hurd
more realistic. Many features of the hurd are plainly ingenious, but those
will prove to be so by themselves without us supposing the hurd is perfect
as is. The more we allow ourselves to question and criticise our own work,
the more we will realize how good it is. And - maybe we even find a point to
improve it...

Ciao,
Nobbi

PS: If you wonder why I write "we" - I'm not an active developer for the
hurd, but I do care very much about the way that project is going. In that
sense I feel as a part of the crew somehow.
