HURD Installation, Success!

Just thought I would add my experience to the HURD reservoir.

I cheated and downloaded hurd19990505.tar.gz and was away in no
time. I reformatted my 2G (which had win98 on it due to a hardware
defective HP CD Writer 7200), which I was very happy to do :). I then
made an ext2fs file system and untarred the beast.

After digging up a QWERTY keyboard (oh yes I'm a dvorak nut) so I
could function in the GRUB and the Hurd, I made a boot disk and
attempted to boot. Through a lot of trial and error I determined the
correct sequence of commands :). The mach hd partition format (hd1s1
etc) was a little odd since the hardrive number starts at 0 but the
partitions start at 1. This caused me some grief, until I found some
docs.

I booted into single user mode and ran the native-install with no
problems. after that everything went well and I even got it to crash!
yee ha!

all in all, I'm glad to have installed an OS that isn't being eyed by
big nasty corporations and supported by these companies for
potentially dubious reasons. aaah it feels good...

woohoo!,
Shawn
