Cannot compile/install a kernel

After I compile a custom kernel and run dpkg -i to
install it, I get this error:

/bin/bash: error opening shared library libdl.so.2:
no such file or directory
Couldn't create initrd.img

libdl.so.2 exists in /lib, and it's configured with
ldconf.  I don't know why bash won't find it.  The
same happens with other shells, so it's not just
bash that won't find it.  Any ideas?
