Re: Unable to get PALO to install on A180 Debian install

Harry,

I didn't read feedback in m-l so you have to start the install cd untill you reach the menu which propose you to format you disk:
at the very first menu <Enter> to "Continue",
here the mentioned menu (it was debian 3.0-r0 ;)
+ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ+ Debian GNU/Linux Installation Main Menu +ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ+

A swap partition is strongly recommended to provide virtual
memory for your system, yet none was detected. Selecting
"Next" will start the partitioning program. Use that to
create "Linux native" and "Linux swap" partitions on your
disks. If you don't want a swap partition, select
"Alternate".

  +ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ+
| | Next : Partition a Hard Disk |

Alternate: Do Without a Swap Partition

Configure the Keyboard
| [...]

here you can klimb down the menu with arrow keys until you encounter:
     Execute a Shell

<Enter> and you get the shell prompt:
You are running "ash", a Bourne-shell clone. The root filesystem is a
RAM disk or floppy. The hard disk filesystems are mounted on "/target".
The editor available to you on this floppy is "nano-tiny". It's very small
and easy to figure out - sorry but "vi" and "emacs" wouldn't fit.
To get an idea of what Unix utilities are available to you, run "ls /bin
/sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin". Use the "exit" command to return to the
installation menu.

Thanks Joel,

As I replied to Grant, my first problem is getting to a shell. I need to
get that far before I can try any of your suggestions.

Best regards,

Harry

Hi Joel,

I have a 60MB F0 partition at the beginning of my disk marked bootable (it
was 32MB, but when I first ran intot the problem, I tried increasing the
size). So that's not it. Any other ideas?

Well the very actual pb (as you well noticed) is that palo failled to be
install in F0 partition, so let us try to go further ;)
btw the root fs stand well under 2Gb limit?
(assume yes)
Reboot first with your cd and in the main menu access to a shell (its a
ash iirc; it's a lightweight shell for install).
You are now in the install ramdisk environement ;).
Create a temporary dir to mount your system disk as follow:
# mkdir -p /mnt/tmpdisk
# mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/tmpdisk

if you use a dedicated fs as boot partition (not required just a
question of feeling ;) mount it also (it will be usefull):
# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/tmpdir/boot

(sda5 is for me my root fs, change it to your config)
and check now your /mnt/tmpdir/etc/palo.conf wich should contain
something like:
--commandline=3/vmlinux root=/dev/sda5 HOME=/
--recoverykernel=/boot/vmlinux
--init-partitioned=/dev/sda

(some detail:
umm vi is not available with ramdisk so you have to use nano ;) (it's
something like msdos edit)
'3/vmlinux': 3 because for me on /dev/sda3 stand a boot partition where
stand the kernel vmlinux
if you don't have a boot partition you should replace it by
5/boot/vmlinux (5 being here as above the root partition change it to
match your config)

as well 'root=/dev/sda5' is the kernel parameter to specify him what is
its root partition)

If the above mentioned palo.conf doesn't match your config don't
hesitate to adapt it to your config.

then you can try to reinstall palo as follow:
# palo -f /mnt/tmpdir/etc/palo.conf -I /dev/sda

That should work (if not come back to me _and_ the m-l ....
well an answer to Grant questions would be very helpfull ;)

You think a 180mHz processor A180 is "so Powerful"?

umm sorry, I confused with a500 ;)

Please advise,
   Joel

Thanks,

Harry

Hello Harry,

Harry Cochran wrote:

Hi,

I'm sure it's something simple, but I' stuck, sorry. I am installing

Debian

off of the official cd (the same thing happens installing from ftp site
using the cd I burned with Nero as a starting point); I get all the way
through the install to "Make the system bootable" and then it comes back

and

says "Unable to install Palo, you may still be able to remote boot by
pointing at the installed system ..." (or something like that).

Don't you forget to create a 'palo' slice ('F0 Linux/PA-RISC boot' as
type in cfdisk) at the begining of your boot disk?
(it is required to put there palo :)

Be sure also that your boot slice (either a dedicated slice or your root
fs containing /boot) stand below the 2Gb limit (I not quiet sure that
palo would work if this condition is not respected).

To verify you can reboot with your install cd and choose to access a
shell (near the end of the install menu iirc) then run 'cfdisk /dev/sda'
(or fdisk /dev/sda and type p to print teh partition table).

That say, I don't think that 'parted' is available on the cd so you
would unfortunately have to re-install your debian from scrach and
taking care of previous conditions.

When I
reboot and go into BOOT_ADMIN and enter boot and then yes to the ipl
question, it comes back and says "SOFT Booted" and then hangs (never gets

to

ipl). If I restart the machine and go through the same proceedure it says
"HARD Booted" and then hangs. If I just let it try to auto boot it does
the
same thing (obviously).

That make sens as there are certainly an hpux installed before which try
to boot it but don't find any more!

If anyone can tell me how to get out of this catch
22, I would appreciate it. I'm planning to use the A180 as a Proxy Server.

umm a so powerfull system for a simple proxy ?)

  Joel
