You are running x first, right???
You can create/edit ~/.xinitrc to contain just the line "gnome-session".
Then run startx. If everything else x-ish is configured right, you should
get gnome. If you have not yet configured X, there have been several
example XF86Config(-4)'s on the list. I suggest looking at
ftp.parisc-linux.org as I believe that there are examples there.
Good luck
Oh, and by the way, I suggest that if you want someone to reply to you in
the future, that you get rid of the "What are you?" in the reply-to
header. It makes replying a little more difficult...

Sally: C'mon, Ted, all I'm asking you to do is share your feelings
with me.
Ted: ALL? Do you realize what you're asking? Men aren't trained
to share. We're trained to protect ourselves by not
letting anyone too close. Good grief, if I go around
sharing everything with you, you could hang me out to dry.
Sally: It's called "trust," Ted.
Ted: "Sharing"? "Trust"? You're really asking me to sail into
uncharted waters here.
