Serial mouse on 725/100
On April 12, 2002, I installed parisc-linux 0.9.3 on a 725/100 . I do
apt-get update and upgrade frequently (just completed one today),
and installed the latest? kernel Linux version 2.4.18-32. Everything is
working properly except the HIL mouse, which I know is not yet
supported. Any idea when HIL mice will be supported? As a work
around I have been vainly trying to install a serial mouse.
Two serial mice later (presently using a two button serial mouse from
RadioShack) and no mouse action in gnome. However, I know
a lot more about XF86Config-4. Here is a the section describing the
mouse:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Serial Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/ttyS1"
# Option "Protocol" "Auto" <--- Can't determine
protocol
Option "Protocol" "Microsoft"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
# Option "Buttons" "2"
# Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
# Option "ClearDTR"
# Option "ClearRTS" <--- Not supported on this O/S
EndSection
To get the serial mouse to work I've tried endless permutations of Auto,
Microsoft, MouseSystems, ClearDTR, Buttons 2, Emulate3Buttons, etc.,
with little progress for nearly a month.
The only positive I can report is that I can see the mouse speak using:
puccini:~# cat < /dev/ttyS1
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM3MMM3M3MMMM3MMMMM ...
It seems to be saying that it is a Microsoft 3 button mouse which is
strange as it only has two buttons ... delusions of grandeur perhaps?
It appears that the mouse is chattering away endlessly and nothing is
listening. Do I need to specify a flow control option?
Further, when Gnome starts the mouse pointer dances from the center
of the screen to the upper left corner of the display (in a series of
jerky movements) and refuses to come out to play thereafter. Is it
possible the serial mouse problem is linked to Gnome?
gpm displays a square cursor for the mouse which likewise (depending
on the configuration) dances to the left corner of the display and sticks
there.
I have run out of ideas, and I really need to get to work on this workstation
rather than working to make it work. PLEASE help! Any suggestions will
be welcome and I shall of course pass along the solution to this problem.
Take care,
frank
