I've seen this before but don't recall what "fixed" it.
I've used regular dialup access from home.

Looking at drivers/net/ppp_generic.c, EGAIN only shows up once.
Adding some printk's around that code should give you the
clue you need to figure out why -EAGAIN is getting returned.
