Re: CD boot failuer - update
Hello again.
Thanks for your assistance, but (alas), I still require more expert
insight. As promised last week, I tried again on Monday (yesterday)
with a new CD "boot disc", but this failed too, as described in the
following mail message that I forwarded to the person who created the
CD for me.
Hopefully, a reader will recognize what needs to be done to correctly
write the CD on an NT workstation (I have no Linux box with a writer
available).
An alternative that was proposed was to do a network install. I am
willing to try this, but am not sure which CD image to use - and of
course, I still need to create the image.
For a network install, is the image named "palinux-0.9.2-install.iso.gz"
correct? It is smaller than the "iso" image, being sized at 36628046
bytes.
I look forward to your responses.

-------------------the problem as it stands on Monday--------------
Rod:
I'm not entirely certain, but I believe that the problem is that the
image on the CD is NOT a filesystem, but appears as a simple file.
The image is of type:
palinux-0.9.2.iso: 8086 relocatable (Microsoft)
What is contained in that image is (at the top level) the following:
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 7376 Jun 26 18:35 README
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 522 Jun 19 06:22 README-ISO
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 1 Jul 9 06:18 debian -> ./
dr-xr-xr-x 3 root root 2048 Jul 9 06:18 dists/
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 26624 Jun 28 09:34 iplboot
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 297 Jun 29 20:01 iso.conf
Since the HP firmware is looking for some readable files, but only
sees "palinux-0.9.2.iso", I believe that the "bad magic" message results:
Trying scsi.3.0
Boot path initialized
Attempting to load IPL
IPL error: bad LIF magic
...does another search for bootable devices...
I suspect that if you cannot "open" the image when writing the CD,
then NT is not suitable for doing that step. We'll have to find a
Linux box with a writer.
I'll attempt to confirm these suspicions with the mail list.
