I believe I read everything pertaining to the firmware. What I did not know was the mechanics of the update. I'm not complaining, there's just assumptions people make that know these systems better than I do.

Yes. You can also:
o dd the upgrade LIF image to a spare HD and boot it there.
  (715 does have 2 HD bays)
o setup bootp to feed the upgrade LIF image to the 715.

  so setup bootp.
