we are still in a freeze, so we won’t upgrade packages in sid right now.
But regular (although slightly slowed down) development happens in
expeirmental, which has 0.4.1, which seems to be ghc-7.8 compatible.
Does that help you?

I also see that there is a very fresh 0.5 version on hackage, although I
must say I find its dependency "utf8-string == 1" strange; will it
really not work with "utf8-string == 1.0.0.1"?

If you want to help out, you might want to ask upstream about this.
