If you want, take a look at http://pocketworkstation.org/, I also have a
Debian distribution with a different approach than what Matt is using. It
*requires* external storage (ideally an SD/MMC card) for the root
filesystem, leaving the onboard flash available for the original OS or
for user data. You can run it using chroot concurrently with the default
Linux install, or alternatively run it natively, using pivot_root to run
everything off the SD card.

Unfortunately I also have had no time recently to update things, but you
can of course run an "apt-get upgrade" to get the latest version of
everything.
