Does ctrl alt f2 bring you to a text console? This sounds like an x problem.

Yes, it takes me to a log on text screen. Not quite sure what to do once I
log on tho.
Working out what's wrong with your X install, and fixing it, would be a start? :-p

Well Damien you could be right. That is just a wee bit beyond my skills. I just downloaded a iso for 6.03 and it does the same thing, only on initial install. There has to be something with the Compaq computers. I did load 6.0 on one in June and it is running just fine. Every now and then it is updated. The computer that just failed, had Ubuntu 11.10 on it. That loaded with now problems and ran just fine. There has to be something in Deb 6 that doesn't like Compaq computers. It sort of looks like I will have to dump Debian and go to Ubuntu. It works. It is strange, if I load from the 6.0 install disk and don't allow it to update, it is fine. When it is finished updating, it will reboot and be ok. But if I reboot it fails. Strange. I think there is a problem in 6. I have run several Debian systems and this is the first time
I have had problems like this..

Thanks for the help.

Doug
