If your system locks up it is not a problem in the fbb program!
User programs cannot cause a lockup, only the kernel or drivers.

As I said, there are known problems with AX.25 in 2.4. They have been
fixed in 2.6, particularly in the latest 2.6.14.

I don't think 2.6 would be any slower than 2.4 on your Pentium system.
Really I don't think you have much choice, as 2.4 AX.25 is unreliable
and we don't support Linux 2.2 with sarge.
