Hi Brian,
as far as I know the mixer utilities need full (write) access to /dev/dsp and 
/dev/mixer as well. Maybe a "chmod o+w /dev/dsp" and "chmod o+w /dev/mixer" 
will be sufficient.
Moreover, there is a user group called "audio" (usually group id 29). Maybe 
you want to add your local user name to this group and do a "chmod g+w" to 
the files instead, since the group of the files mentioned above should be 
"audio".
