BINGO!!!!  That did it!  Thanks very much, Hamish!!!  I spent the afternoon 
trying to figure why it wouldn't work.  I don't recall seeing anything in the
HOWTO or docs mentioning this conflict.

Odd.  If I take it out, the soundmodem driver complains about unresolved
parport symbols.

Now that it works, the fun begins as I figure out to use the Linux box as a
TNC.  Any suggestions?  :-)  Thanks again!!
