You can scroll back a text console with shift-PgUp.

Also svgatextmode can be used to get more lines and more characters per
line on your screen.

If you want something really minimal, don't even choose the minimum
profile, but just go into dselect and choose what you want (probably
this may be a bit overwhelming for a beginner).

Don't worry.  It's a learning process and the mailing lists are a good
source of help. I've been a ham for 47 years and a Linux user for only
five years (three months Slackware, two years Red Hat and the rest
Debian. I compiled my first kernel after less than a month (it's really
easy, besides the probing for my ancient CD-ROM wouldn't work most of
the time). 

You probably want a newer kernel than the default in any case (was it
2.0.32?)  Those needed a patch and recompile for AX.25, while the later
ones (2.0.38 is the latest 2.0 kernel) have the patch changes built in.
