I have looked at it in the past but never installed it due to the
(IMHO) messy installation procedure. A package would be interesting.
My present APRS gateway is using the soundmodem and hence needs aprsd
to use Linux AX.25 instead of talking direct to the TNC though,
so I can't run it.

Sounds good. I was working on a curses interface at one stage and
haven't gotten back to it.
