gnome-applets volume control problem

My volume control applet seems to have gone mad.  I
can't raise the volume it just drops back to the
bottom.  I have several other boxes that are running
Sarge but they seem to have resolved them selves
through apt but htis one box is still having problems
with it.  There was a bug report open about this has
anyone else still having this problem?
