Bug #241184 may be causing this problem ("gdm: List of Available
Sessions Lost on Upgrade"):

GDM no longer reads sessions from the old Sessions directory. Xfce4
needs to add its session to /etc/dm/Sessions to be available from GDM.
For now, the above bug log provides a workaround.
