I'm currently using 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 although I may have not restarted X since that particular package was installed. I'll try restarting X tomorrow when I'm back at work (can't test remotely of course, as it all works fine remotely). On the other hand, I just upgraded to Debian unstable Gnome 2.6 on my PowerPC laptop with no problems at all. thanks, John.
