Testversion of synaptic 0.50 available

Dear Friends,

As some of you may know synaptic is a graphical frontend for apt. It
tries to be easy to use, good looking but still appealing for advanced
users.

The upcoming version 0.50 has some nice new features. The GUI is
reworked and simpler, nicer and more HIG compliant. And a lot of code
in the internal engine was cleaned up. See a screenshot here:
http://people.debian.org/~mvo/synaptic/0.50/synaptic-0.50pre1.png

We would like to ask for some user testing now. It's fairly stable for
us developers already. You can download a tarball from
http://people.debian.org/~mvo/synaptic/0.50/synaptic-0.50pre1.tar.gz

A debian package is apt-get-able (or synaptic get-able :) when you add
this line to your sources.list (build against debian/sid):
deb http://people.debian.org/~mvo/synaptic/0.50 ./

If you build from source, it is recommended to build the debian
version with --with-vte as terminal output system. A build against
gtk2.4 is highly recommended as gtk2.4 has a "fixed-height" mode that
makes the GtkTreeView widget much faster.

I'm also interessted in feedback from people with slower machines. I
would love to know how the performance compares between 0.48 and 0.50
on such systems.

Known problems:
- debtags support not ported yet (help welcome)
- package submenu not sensitive (actions like "install" are always
  shown but not always available)
- documentation is not up-to-date
- most translations not complete
- some ngettext issues

Please send any suggestions, bugreports, backtraces, etc to the list
or to me directly.

thanks,
 Michael
