I found the problem. gnome-settings-daemon sets de resource Xft.dpi at a ridiculous value (3/32, about 0.1) the first time. The bug it seems comes from corrupted files in /etc/gconf: /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/schemas/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/editor/%gconf.xml /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/schemas/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/screensaver/%gconf.xml I don't know how to find out what packages these come in: dpkg -S doesn't list them, and a grep in /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.conffiles doesn't either, and packages.debian.org doesn't know it either. I simply reinstalled gnome-control-center, the package that brings gnome-settings-daeomn; that didn't work: Setting up gnome-control-center (2.2.2-1) ... Entity: line 1: error: Start tag expected, '<' not found ^ Failed to parse XML file "/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/schemas/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/editor/%gconf.xml" -- John Lenton (john@grulic.org.ar) -- Random fortune: Mais enrolada que linguiça de venda.
