Erm, why? Currently, both sid and sarge have gal_0.24-1.2 in them.

Perhaps you are building it against the wrong version of glib? gal 0.24 is
meant to be built against glib1, not glib2.
For reference, gal_0.24-1.2 builds fine in a sarge pbuilder chroot when its
dependencies are installed ("apt-get build-dep gal").
