I saw exactly the same things on GNOPPIX on a i386 laptop yesterday
evening.

downgrading to Xfree86 from unstable fixes these issues. I think they are related to fonts. Try reinstalling fontconfig and letting it rebuild the font cache.

I have seen this a lot on knoppix systems when upgrading/installing gnome2.4. After downgrading Xfree86 things are good again :-) Just remember to change the protocol for the mouse from "auto" to whatever you have "IMPS/2" or "PS/2".
