It seems that I was not very clear:
It worked with the plain testing version (where gnome-control-center is 1.4)
It stopped working when I did apt-get -t unstable install gnome-core,
and got a pure gnome2 dekstop.

So yes I know that mixing is not supported, but that was not the problem
(but the solution).
