GNOME, TrueType fonts and xfs-xtt

I have xfs-xtt set up on a remote machine, happily serving a bunch of
fonts (including TrueType fonts like the BitStream fonts) to my
workstation.

xlsfonts shows thousands of fonts. gtkfontsel and xfontsel can both load
and display all of these fonts.

Rxvt can use the fonts, although it can't scale them (so they're far too
big to use).

But these fonts do not appear in the list of fonts available for selection
in gnome-font-properties (or gnome-terminal's font selection dialog
either).

Abiword can't find these fonts either.

If I install the fonts on the local machine, then GNOME and Abiword can
find them.

I don't want them installed on the local machine. I want them served by
a central font server. That's what font servers are for.

I've spent about three days straight googling and searching the BTS and
mailing lists and such, but no clues so far.

Help!
