I believe that Mozilla built against Gtk 1.2 also uses fontconfig, if
you have the mozilla-xft package installed. The latter one depends on
both libfontconfig1 and libxft2.

BTW: Is there any documentation on fonts.conf availabe that is
suitable for an average user (like me)? There is almost nothing at
fontconfig.org.

For some reason the default sans font that fontconfig uses on my box
seems to be Helvetica:style=Bold Italic (not sure about Helvetica,
actually. May also be another italic font), which looks terrible. I've
played around with fonts.conf a while, but still the default sans font
that fontconfig chooses is always italic. (mozilla-xft is affected by
this, also KDE 3.1, but for some reason Gnome 2.2 is not.)

I have msttcorefonts and ttf-freefont installed

Thanks,.

Johannes
