Just a note -- today's upgrade to gtk 2.2 seems to have fixed all my problems problems, now at everything seems to display Japanese correctly (gnome-panel, menus, control-center, etc). I'm not sure where the problem was, but I'm happy it's gone... Thanks for your help, -Miles -- .Numeric stability is probably not all that important when you're guessing.
