getting antialiased fonts to work

Hi,
Please forgive me if this is dreadfully obvious, but I've been banging my head against the wall trying to get my gnome2 apps to use antialiased fonts, with no luck. Can someone point out *all* of the configurations I need to change to get this to happen? I have updated my /etc/X11/XftConfig to contain the deforma directories, I have tried to run the gdkxft-capplet to select fonts to antialias, but I still get 'Cannot load font for XLFD' when I try to select fonts from the msttcorefonts package. I am uncertain what should be happening in my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, what I should be putting in the FontPath, and what modules I should be loading. Do I need recompile freetype for this to work at all, as some HOWTO's I've found have indicated? What's particularly frustrating is that antialiased fonts work in mozilla, but not elsewhere. I'm really very lost on this, so I'm not even sure what information I can provide that's most relevant to trying to figure this out. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks very much in advance.
