Upgrading openssl is probably not the cause of your problem.

No. I have similar problems building gnumeric CVS HEAD.

Not unless OpenSSL itself is built using libtool, AFAIK.

Most likely what you are seeing is http://bugs.debian.org/155556 or a
similar problem (libgnomeui-dependent library that should be rebuilt now
that libgnomeui has switched from using OpenSSL to using gnutls).

"grep -l 'ssl\.la\>' /usr/lib/*.la" can give you a starting point as to
which libraries are problematic.
