To use the transition scripts, you must run gnome-session rather than
launching GNOME desktop components from a custom session.  Choose the
GNOME session from GDM, or 'exec gnome-session' from ~/.xsession (and
remove any gnome components or window manager you are starting by hand).

(This will also prevent the problem of components like 'panel' changing
with new GNOME releases.)
