RE: Gnome 2.0 antialiased fonts (got it working)

I've had the hanging problem too, it seems to hang if you leave the font the
same, and just change the size...I work around it by first changing the font
to something else, closing the dialog. Then I am able to re-open the font
selector, change the font to the one I want, and then change the size to
what I want...

But will all our users know about this ? I guess many will think this is
a Gnome feature, don't you think.

Because it hangs gnome ?

I just enabled it in /etc/gdm/Session/Gnome and when i rebooted, i got
the AA fonts. They are not that beautifull, and they were much bigger
than the fixed fonts i was using before, so i said, cool, it works,
let's just change the font setting. I got to the preference, (the menu
entries were still there, how nice) choose the font item, and got to
change the size of the fonts. But in the process of doing this, the
fonts selction applet hang, and i had to go out of X and kill gnome
(well i /etc/init.d/gdm restart), and since then, no more gnome.

(I have X and a working cursor, but not even the initial gnome splash
screen does appeari, well there is always the console to resort to).

Mmm, i will be looking where gnome hangs, no there is nothing unusual in
the .gnome-errors.

BTW, i had previously GDK_USE_XFT=1 in .gtkrc-2.0, but it don't seem to
have been used by gtk 2, altough i did read somewhere (maybe even on
this list) that this was how it was supposed to work. So you see the
need for some sort of centralized documentation on how to make this work
? But then, maybe i am just stupid, ...

BTW2, maybe we could have a gnome-AA and a gnome session ?

Friendly,

Sven Luther
