Problem with applets

Gidday,

I've been having some major problems with applets under Gnome. Whenever
I try to load one I get the following error:

cyclops:~$ pilot_applet

** WARNING **: Cannot activate a panel object

** WARNING **: Cannot start CORBA

cyclops:~$

(There's a couple of other errors but I thing that's just
pilot_applet.) Checking the Gnome mailing lists it seems that this error
message typically means that the sysconfdir is wrong. But it looks right
(all the applets are putting their information in /etc/CORBA/servers and
there is no other CORBA directory on my system), I've tried compiling
pilot_applet to no avail. If anyone can shed any light on this I'd
greatly appreciate it!

I'm running Woody, virtually the bleeding edge of everything (all the
Gnome packeges are the latest version). However it isn't because I'm
running the bleeding edge, applets haven't worked for about 6 months. I
just want to get them working now since I've just been given a Palm
Pilot...

If you want any more information, just ask. Also, if this is the wrong
place to ask this, please point me in the right direction.

Cheers!
