It would help if you provided more information but I'll try to help.

I just tried gqwiew on my potato system with jpegs and gifs.  It worked
just fine.  Can you please check your ~/.imrc file, if you have one,
and make sure that the palette file location is pointing to /etc/imlib
instead of /etc/im.  The palette file location changed.
