As I said, bootup is 100% OK.

On login, there are a series of errors from the bashrc file. Not too intelligible. ANY command typed in segfaults.

The segfaults started immediately after upgrading to the lib6 and dependent packages, version -7 from Sid.

One hint might be that recent compilation attempt (unrelated music program) could not find libgcc_s. None of the symlinks ending in ".so" "worked" and I needed to manually add such a symlink in /lib to link up.

One other hint (not likely) is that synaptic gives errors converting utf8 to latin1 and exits. Reportbug-ng works but leaves errors like:

QIconvCodec::convertFromUnicode: using Latin-1 for conversion, iconv failed for BOM: Bad file descriptor

QIconvCodec::convertFromUnicode: using Latin-1 for conversion, iconv_open failed

QIconvCodec::convertToUnicode: using Latin-1 for conversion, iconv_open failed

(I do not want to unnecessarily try to boot up the errant Sid /lib because of possible file system damage.)
