Package: locales
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-22sarge3

I'm hesitant to report bugs when the problem is usually with me, but apt-get suggested it, so here goes. After frequently getting messages like the following when running commands:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
       LANGUAGE = "en_GB:en_US:en_GB:en",
       LC_ALL = (unset),
       LANG = "en_GB"
   are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

, I tried to reconfigure "locales". It turned out to be improperly installed, and gave:

sjoh1831:/etc/rc5.d# dpkg-reconfigure locales
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
       LANGUAGE = "en_GB:en_US:en_GB:en",
       LC_ALL = (unset),
       LANG = "en_GB"
   are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: locales is broken or not fully installed

   I completely removed the package, and tried to reinstall:

sjoh1831:/usr/share# apt-get install locales

Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 locales: Depends: glibc-2.3.2.ds1-22sarge3
E: Broken packages

When I tried to install the virtual package glibc-2.3.2.ds1-22sarge3, I found that libc6 was already installed as the most recent version:

sjoh1831:/usr/share# apt-get install glibc-2.3.2.ds1-22sarge3
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Note, selecting libc6 instead of glibc-2.3.2.ds1-22sarge3
libc6 is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I am using Debian sarge, with kernel 2.6.8-2-386, and libc6 version 2.3.6-3

I'm sorry to bother you, I managed to fix the problem by downloading a few
'testing' level packages. I don't have a record of which ones or which order
they were installed in though.

This bug really looks like a problem of your installation, and as you fixed it another way, I am closing it.

Bye,
Aurelien
