fixed:

Cannot load /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so into server:
/lib/tls/libresolv.so.2: symbol __res_maybe_init, version
GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time

i had since upgrading:
 libc6 2.3.2.ds1-20 -> 2.3.4-1
on  march 23.

I don't know why the only thing broken on  my setup was
apache/php4
