As bash was also a problem I seriously doubt this. No, the workaround
for me is to downgrade the kernel to 2.4 while inside the VM, 2.6 works
fine directly on the hardware, where I need the new drivers, and lilo
can select the kernels automatically.

I did contact VMWare at the same time I gave you the heads up as, like
I said, it really does look like a bug in their emulation.

VMWare claim to have 'Improved support for guests using Linux kernels
in the 2.6 series' in their latest Betas I haven't tried them yet
but they do seem to be on the case.

If you wish to close this bug that's fine as I expect it will hang around
on debian-bugs long enough for VMWare to release their fix.
